DISSIPATING DESERT THUNDERSTORM 5-20-1997 (s)

This is all that remains of a pulse type storm that formed in the late afternoon over White Sands, NM. Photo was featured in 1998 Weatherwise Photo Contest and the 2001 Old Farmer's Almanac Calendar.

MULTIPLE CG'S NEAR ALAMOGORDO, NM 5-20-1997 (s)

Lightning activity began to increase as orographic storms intensified just after sunset. These CG's were captured during a 40 second time exposure on Fuji Velvia 50 slide film.

SWISHER COUNTY MESO - TX 5-22-1997 (s)

The rotating base of this Supercell Thunderstorm is clearly defined by its circular banding. The inflow fingers on the southern flank of this storm are being illuminated by the setting sun.

SWISHER COUNTY MESO - TX 5-22-1997 (s)

The base of this Supercell Thunderstorm began to lower after sunset and CG's became more frequent. Reports of 3" deep hail along I-27 were recorded at the time this photo was taken.

This is a wider angle view looking to the NE at the rotating updraft base with imbedded lightning activity. Notice the Beaver's Tail cloud feeding in from the east (right side of photo). Numerous storms were developing to my west and south as this photo was taken.

BACKSHEARED ANVIL - ANTHONY, KS 5-25-1997 (s)

Storms exploded ahead of the dryline during the late afternoon of 5-25-97. Looking NW near Anthony, KS, notice the incredibly backsheared anvil on this developing tornadic thunderstorm, indicative of a very powerful updraft! A very weak/brief tornado had formed right before this photo was taken.

BIRTH OF A TORNADO - ANTHONY, KS 5-25-1997 (s)

Looking NNW you can see several lowerings and suspicious funnel clouds over the town of Anthony, KS. A brief tornado was spawned from one of these funnel clouds shortly after this photo was taken.

EXPLOSIVE CUMULONIMBUS - ANTHONY, KS 5-25-1997 (s)

This explosive Cb was photographed just east of Anthony KS. LCL's (Lifting Condensation Levels) were quite low on this day as storm bases appeared to be just above ground level.

DEPARTING SUPERCELL - ANTHONY, KS 5-25-1997 (s)

You are looking east as this departing supercell is being illuminated by the setting sun. This storm was producing the "Wellington Wedge" tornado around the time this picture was taken. Photo was featured in 1998 Weatherwise Photo Contest and the 2001 Old Farmer's Almanac Calendar.

LONE CG - SPEARMAN, TX 5-29-1997 (s)

This lonely looking CG was the last photograph taken during my 1997 chase vacation. Daytime lightning can be quite a challenge, and I used up nearly a roll of film in an attempt to get this one decent exposure!
