Fall Foliage - Cuyahoga National Park & Nearby Areas of Northeast Ohio

 Scenic's & Points of Interest

Autumn 2014

October 13 - 16, 2014

Nancy and I had the pleasure of visiting Cuyahoga Valley National Park just south of Cleveland, Ohio during the peak of northern Ohio's fall foliage season.  We spent three days touring and hiking the park in search of its many waterfalls and other points of interest.  The weather was rather mild and rainy during much of this period which was great for photography.  We also spent part of our time visiting all of the famous covered bridges of Ashtabula County located in far northeastern Ohio.  Our last day was spent finishing up the covered bridge tour (see link bottom of this page) and visiting the beautiful "Freedom Falls" which are located in a remote area of northwestern Pennsylvania.

The Ledges - View 1:  We finished our first day in the park by visiting a high overlook of rock outcroppings known as "The Ledges".

The Ledges - View 2:  With its western overlook, The Ledges is a great place to finish up the day and enjoy a pretty sunset.

Sylvan Pond Reflections:   We started off our second morning hiking around Sylvan Pond via Oak Hill Trail.  We experienced overcast skies with occasional showers, but the fall colors were fabulous!

Sylvan Pond FoliageThe large variety of hardwood trees surrounding Sylvan Pond show off their showy autumn colors.

Sylvan Pond Bench:  A nice place to relax and take in the fall colors.

Meadowedge PondThis is smaller, but scenic pond located just off the Oak Hill Trail and is not too far from Sylvan Pond.

Lily Pad PortraitNancy took this image of the varied-colored lily pads floating atop the dark waters of Meadowedge Pond.

Plateau TrailAn inviting line of trees creates a tunnel effect along the Plateau Trail north of the Oak Hill Trailhead.

Kendall Lake Trail:  Nancy taking a break along the "Lake Trail" that circumnavigates Kendall Lake.

Pond ReflectionsA small pond reflects the autumn colors near Kendal Lake.

Autumn StaircaseAn inviting staircase climbs the Lake Trail on the west side of Kendall Lake.

Beavers HandiworkThis is one of the many trees lining the west side of Kendall Lake showing that Beavers were busy here trying to topple trees in hopes of creating a dam near a creek inlet.

Mill Creek - Ashtabula County Ohio This a view of the leaf clogged Mill Creek from the Doyle Road Covered Bridge located in northeastern Ohio.

Ledges Trail - Rock Tunnel:   A look down into a narrow rock crevice located above the Ledges Trail.

Ledges Trail View:   A multitude of colorful rock outcroppings line the north face of the Ledges Trail.

Ledges Trail Rock Outcroppings:  A short walk into one of the many narrow passageways between the rock cliffs reveals  towers of stratified rock.

Ice Box Cave:  The park service no longer permits entry to the cave and it is now gated and off limits to visitors.

Ice Box Cave - Staircase:   This staircase leads to the "Ice Box" and was once used by park visitors.  This entire area is off limits and can no longer be reached by visitors.

Ledges Trail:  Here is another view of the massive rock outcroppings that line the trail near the old entrance to Ice Box Cave.

Ledges Trail - Searching Roots:  A tree's roots search far and wide for fertile soil amid the rocky cliffs in this photo portrait.

The Ledges Staircase:  This grand staircase built into the rock cliffs ascends to a flat meadow and picnic area.  Definitely one of the easier and "safer" ways to get above or below the ledges.

Ledges Trail Map:  This map lays out our route which started above the Ice Box Cave, then followed the trail below the rock ledges to the grand staircase located on the right side of the map.

Nature's Palette:  A colorful palette of autumn leaves located along the Linda Falls Trail.

Tinkers Gorge Overlook:  The boardwalk leading to the Tinkers Gorge Overlook is located near the northern border of the park.

Tinkers Gorge View A foggy view from the boardwalk overlook.

Turkeys & DeerA small flock of turkeys and a deer meet near the Tinkers Gorge Overlook.

The Arch & Viaduct:   This scene can be found along Tinkers Creek a little downstream from Great Falls. The lower arch once housed a massive wood turbine used to generate electricity.

Mosquito Creek Lake:  This image was taken several miles south of Cuyahoga NP.  A strong Lake Effect Snow Squall had developed off to our northwest and I hurried to this location just in time to capture the ragged clouds racing overhead.

Iron Furnace of Freedom Falls:  In remarkable good shape, this old Iron Furnace still stands near Freedom Falls which can be seen in the distance.  Venango County, Pennsylvania

Iron Furnace & Mill Race of Freedom Falls:  Another view of the Iron Furnace with the very much intact water mill race shown in the foreground.  Venango County, Pennsylvania

Imaging the Scenic's:  Nancy snapped this image of me absorbed in photographing the Fall Foliage Scenery.
