Eastern Pennsylvania - Northern Berks County

Evening of November 11th 2025

A very strong geomagnetic storm occurred during the evening of November 11, 2025 that brought the aurora display down over much or North America . This was another in a series of strong solar storms that occurred during the last two years of the current solar cycle.  A Kp index of 8+ (out of 9) was reached by early evening and I could easily see red skies to my north when looking out my bedroom window.  We had overcast skies all day, but a brief period of clearing took place from about 8pm to 10pm EST.  I was aware there would be a good chance for a nice display to occur, but given the overcast skies all day and the coldest and windiest night since last March I was not very enthused about heading outside.  Thus, I likely missed the first 30-45 minutes of the display.  That being said I was not disappointed by what I saw and had chance to photograph!

Once again I used my Canon R6 Mark II mounted with a Canon RF15-35mm f2.8L wide angle lens.  I opted for short exposures between 2.5 & 4 seconds at ISO2500 - all 15mm at a f2.8 aperture.

Below are a few of my favorite images from this event. All images were taken from the countryside of northern Berks County about 20 miles north of Reading, Pennsylvania

9:10pm EST: This was one of the first photos I captured after finally getting my tripod and camera set up.  This is looking to the NNW.  Skies were nice and clear at this point, but you can see the leading edge of some high clouds rolling in from the west (lower left side of photo).

9:11pm EST: This one is looking straight north showing the "green oval" with some red pillars above.  Notice how the water puddle is reflecting the green aurora.

9:15pm EST: Here you are looking NNE viewing the eastern edge of the aurora.

9:16pm EST: This view is looking towards the northwest at the western edge of the green aurora oval with extensive red aurora above.

9:27pm EST:  Cloud cover is beginning to overtake the western edge of the display, but in some ways the high clouds actually enhanced the colors.

9:31pm EST:  A few minutes later the red flare on the left brightened and extended skyward, unfortunately the lower clouds obscured the view of this feature somewhat.

9:40pm EST: This was one of the final images I took before the cloud cover completely ended the show.  Notice the faint orange aurora near the right (east) side of the photo.
