All you need to start taking a few nature photographs yourself is a nice camera.  Don't get discouraged if your pictures don't look like mine or the ones you see in brochures, taking good photos takes time and a lot of practice.  No one starts out as a professional at first.  Photography is a great hobby for any type of person to take up, from parents to someone with a public administration degree or a weather enthusiast like myself!  If you're a student taking classes for GIS programs and need a stress relief I suggest you try a photography elective.
